Interview with Aimee Mayo

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Aimee Mayo over Zoom video!

“I encourage EVERYONE to read this book. It is healing in so many ways. (Aimee) is such a talented writer.” —TIM MCGRAW, Country music superstar and actor

"Wow. I feel bad about getting married :) after reading this. It reads like a movie." — RICK SPRINGFIELD, Grammy Award winning musician, actor and bestselling author

"OMG. Aimee's book is one of the best things I've ever read. Unbelievable writing, fantastic storyteller, and completely honest." —BART HERBISON, President of Nashville Songwriters Association International

“All my greatest gifts have come wrapped in ribbons of pain.” With this tantalizing opening line, I’d like to introduce you to Aimee Mayo and her debut memoir, TALKING TO THE SKY: A Memoir of Living Your Best Life in A Sh*t-Show (Little Blue Typewriter Press; Paperback; December 1, 2020). Aimee is a Grammy-nominated songwriter and one of the few women to receive both BMI's Country Song of the Year, and BMI's Country Songwriter of the Year—putting her in the elite company of Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift, and Loretta Lynn.

Her tragic, yet triumphant story begins one Christmas eve in rural Alabama with the shocking news of her father’s attempted suicide when she was just eight years old. Aimee was gifted a journal that fateful night in which she began to record her mind-blowing experiences with her bipolar father, who drifted in and out of her life, an abusive stepfather, caring, but deeply wounded relatives, and a nomadic childhood.

Aimee expertly invites the reader into her wild youth growing up in the deep south, switching schools, bouncing from one family home to the next, and accidentally burning down her house...and car. After a close encounter with death, at the age of 19, Aimee eventually makes her way to Nashville to pursue her dream of becoming a songwriter, and falls right into the arms of another abuser. Aimee must once again, with wit and unflappable humor, pick herself up and walk away.

Aimee’s dream eventually became a reality, and now she’s ready to share her incredible story. Her fifteen-year writing journey produced TALKING TO THE SKY, a universal story of faith over fear and triumph against all obstacles. It’s a must-read for anyone trying to pursue their dreams despite it all.
