Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Murky Waters over Zoom video!
Music has always been the only place I feel comfortable expressing myself. I experienced a lot of trauma at a young age, losing my mother when I was 5 years old and consequently being raised by a single father. I have always struggled with expressing my emotions verbally. It feels like there is a war going on inside my head that I am constantly battling, but when I am writing lyrics it all comes out of me very naturally. In my music I try to talk about dark topics in a colorful way. I tend to write primarily about sad subjects like heartbreak and loss, but my melodies and beats are a bit happier and brighter sounding. I feel like it makes for a nice balance for the listener.
Murky Waters has this to say about his latest release "Alone":
“This track is about the struggle of regaining independence from a traumatic relationship. It captures the feeling of wanting someone so bad you drive yourself crazy, then losing them and falling apart, unable to shake the thought of them. When I was writing ‘Alone’ the melody came to me naturally as Ford Jones, my producer, and I was working on the beat. At that point, the words ‘I’ve been lost all alone; You broke my heart and left me helpless’ seemed to follow fluently. From there the topic had sort of just established itself and I took my experiences and filled in the blanks.”
